DARK PARTS

So before I put up the last mix (Built to Rebuild), I was actually working on this one. Initially, this was only going to have 10 songs and would’ve been the shortest mix I’ve ever compiled; however, I didn’t think those 10 songs really translated just how (allow me to blatantly put it) “shitty” I felt. I won’t tell you everything because it’s personal and I’d rather not share it with however many of you read these things but, I’m sure you’ve all been there and experienced it at some point already- I’m inexperienced and have just endured the early phases of this complex emotion that is so sought-after and it finally fucking got to me this past month or so- it was literally all I could think about and crave for.

Dark Parts was built around the song of the same name, which was performed by Perfume Genius, and if you listen to it and this compilation in its entirety, you’ll know exactly where I’m coming from. You might even be in the same situation (but I’m hoping you’ll get out of it soon as compiling these mixes has made me laugh at how poorly I went about this whole thing. Ah, the power of music. I’d also like to add that the photograph chosen for this mixtape is fucking awesome, hence no text.).

BUILT TO REBUILD

 I’ve been in a weird music funk as of lately and haven’t been able to listen to anything else aside from Lana Del Rey, Perfume Genius and Porcelain Raft. I figured it was time to shake it off because A) I don’t want to be sick of any of these three records as the year progresses and B) there’s been a shitload of amazing leaks and releases that I was/have not been listening to (this also applies to the bands/musicians that have been e-mailing me. I’m trying to think of a better and easier way for your content to get heard through this website as I have not been checking my e-mails as consistently as I should be- I sincerely and regrettably apologize for that). I was working on another one at the wee-early hours of this morning but I decided to go for a different sound/mood. Like the previous mixtape I compiled back in January (Light-headed), this one continues on with the alternative/indie genre and contains some bands that I haven’t been listened to since summer so there’s a blend of tracks from 2011 and 2012 (as it should be). Listening to the other three records have kept me at a standstill- personally, physically and musically, so it’s nice to be able to move around and bob my head side-to-side rather than curling up in a ball with my layers of blanket hovering over me. With that being said (or typed), I hope you guys enjoy it.

(On another note, there’s still a lot of music that I have yet placed onto a mixtape but I think the next one will be more upbeat and electronic/funk/not mellow or moody. It might be moody but, it’ll be the good kind.)

I had trouble sleeping last night so, naturally, I compiled yet another mixtape. The one posted yesterday (Light-headed) was more centered on the alternative/indie genres and the songs were, in general, much easier to listen to. Vortex runs for about an hour and fifty-one fifty-nine minutes and is a fuse of songs that I’ve been wanting to put onto a mix but never really “fit” in with the others; this one’s more experimental and some songs may require a second listen, depending on the mood you’re in.  So, if you’re feeling musically adventurous and patient today, give this a spin.

Motivation came about as I was flipping through some of my old-school National Geographic magazines I purchased on my trip to Louisiana this past summer. I stumbled upon this picture taken by Robert W. Madden in the November 1979 issue depicting members partaking in the annual Carole Kai Bed Race. Fittingly, this compilation is one for the racers, the do-ers and those that just need a push to do something.
